American Cancer Society gets assist from Lynx Volleyball
Pink Out packs a punch for Breast Cancer awareness month

Every October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The Lynx Volleyball Program has participated in many “Pink Out” games in previous seasons, but this year the girls really packed a punch.
With special game shirts for grades 9-12 Lynx volleyball players and coaches, Groves & Chizek Law Offices and Wildcard Custom Gear were part of the action. The law firm purchased the shirts for the event, while Wildcard designed the shirts and donated 15% of the proceeds from sales back to the American Cancer Society. The color of the shirts? Pink of course!
A Pink Out game is a service-based game day, hosted by the volleyball program. This year the game day was September 24.The girls participating have different ways in which to raise money and awareness.
This year, they chose one game statistic that would be tracked during the games. Then, each varsity player picked one business in town to ask to make a donation or a dollar amount pledge for the chosen statistic. This year, the girls chose “kills” . The kill shot is an attack that results directly in a point for the team. This can happen when the ball hits the floor on the opponent’s side, goes out of bounds after touching an opponent, or results in an opponent error. Examples of a kill are spikes, tips, tools or roll shots. The total amount of kills were matched with participating businesses in the games played that day.
In addition to the game day statistic pledges, the girls also held a silent pie auction during the evening to generate funds. Finally, a third fundraising effort was a “Run Through The Stands” effort asking spectators for donations of loose change. The proceeds from all of these fundraising efforts totaled $3,434.93.
Athletics Director, Jess Howard knows the volleyball girls take a lot of pride in this event. For many of them a parent or close family member has had to battle some form of cancer.
"(The program) really teaches our girls a sense of service and how to give back to a greater cause”, she said.
Howard said there is one moment during the night that is her favorite.
“Announcing the girls on the team for the night, (along) with the person that they are playing for, hearing that they are playing for their moms, grandparents, aunts, etc," is that moment, said Howard. "(When we then see) them sometimes give their throw volleyball to that person really puts into perspective how truly grateful we all need to be for our health and for advanced medicine that allows so many people to be able to survive cancer.”
Howard said she helps the girls put on this event each year so they can continue to support the medical field and its pursuit to end all forms of cancer.

The Lynx volleyball players had a great showing of support from the Webster City community in this important cause.
