New Church building ceremony observed
Construction of a new $60,000 Sunday school unit for the First Baptist church in Webster City got underway last evening when Bernard Westervelt, chairman of the building committee, turned over the first shovel of sud at the site just north of the present church building. Other members of the committee on hand for the ceremony were Lyle Miller, Glen Beebe, S.S. Parkhurst and Lester Gordon. The Rev. Oliver Enersen had charge of the groundbreaking ceremony which opened with a selection by the male quartet consisting of Ray Bruner, Ron Isaacson and Guilford West. The pastor read the scriptural passages concerning the construction of the temple in Jerusalem and Lyle Miller led in prayer. Plans for the new three-floor building were started a year ago and a fund-raising drive was staged last November.

Ham Operators Busy
For the first time in the history of the Hamilton County fair, fair-goers will have an opportunity to send messages to anyplace in the world, without charge, via radio.
The Hamilton County Amateur Radio association, in cooperation with the Hamilton County Civil Defense organization, will have two "Ham" radio stations in operation in the former press-radio building on the midway.
Visitors will have an opportunity to see these stations in operation, view the various types of equipment used and learn more about the fast-growing "Ham" radio hobby.
The "Hams" will also have a TV set operating next t o the transmitting equipment to demonstrate the "Ham" radios do not interfere with TV reception that is functioning properly.
The majority of the radio operators are also members of the Hamilton County Civil Defense emergency radio system.

Framed spider web 'back home' again
A spider web that 4-H'er Nancy Cramer of Blairsburg created more than a year ago is finally being returned to her.
Janet Drago, Hamilton County Extension 4-H and Youth Leader, said Cramer's spider web had been part of the first 4-H creative visual art touring exhibit, "4-H'ers Create and Design." Her creation and 26 others were exhibited at 11 Iowa locations and at the National 4-H center in Washington, D.C.

Although engine problems cancelled her real bid to take over first place in the Gold Cup hydroplane races on Lake Washington, near Seattle, on Aug. 9, Brenda Jones, formerly of Webster City did set a record.
She became the first woman to race unlimited hydroplane boats in 44 years.
The wife of Alan (Capt. America) Jones had been assigned to pilot the 2900 horsepower Miss KHYYX-FM thunderboat and had done well in earlier races leading up to last Sunday's Gold Cup race.
Her family here in Webster City flew out to Seattle to view the Gold Cup races and qualifying events.
Incidentally the former Brenda Hoversten has been nominated as one of the Outstanding Young Women of America for 1981 for professional achievement and community service.

Library expansion work could begin in spring '97
The People's Project is coming closer to completion said Library DDirector Cynthia Weiss Tuesday night.
Weiss told a meeting of the Kendall Young Library Board that architect Jeff Scherer is completing construction documents.
Carlson selected for leadership institute
Richard C. Carlson, AFM of Webster City, was one of 20 people nationwide selected to take part in national leadership training in Washington, D.C. in July. The American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, a professional society, annually selects outstanding members who are active in their local chapter and on national committees for participation in the leadership institute.

P & Z approves space for cemetery, housing
The planning and zoning commission met briefly Monday evening and took action that will provide for future additional space for the cemetery and new housing. Approval was given for the minor subdivision plat of the Kurtz addition to Webster City which borders Beach and Wall Streets. The 23.63 acres will, 10 to 15 years from now provide seven acres for use as a cemetery and the remaining acres to new housing.
Also approved was both the preliminary plat and the final plat of the J.C. Properties, L.C. Subdivision in Webster City. The concurrent consideration of both the preliminary and final plats were given, permissible within city ordinances, to expedite the possibility of an interested party beginning construction immediately, in an area just west of the Country Kitchen.
