'Hopper situation serious
Hamilton County is infested with as many grasshoppers now as any western Iowa county last year. Unless something is done, according to County Agent H.M. Nichols, to destroy them immediately, farmers in this community may experience extensive damage in another year.
About 200 farmers were reached at the four grasshopper control meetings held in the county Monday in charge of A.C. Hansbury, extension service entomologist, Iowa state college, Ames.
Since that time, men from all parts of the county have visited the Farm Bureau offices seeking poison bran. County agent Nichols received word yesterday that a car of poison bran had arrived at Nevada and Hamilton county could have about 60 sacks of it.

Flight breakfast brings 125 planes to city
More than 125 planes, some of them coming as far away as Stanberry, Mo., an Omaha and Lincoln, Neb., brought 267 hungry air travelers to the Webster City airport for a flight breakfast sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol yesterday morning. There were also about 60 drive-in breakfasters at the airport for the event. One of the top attractions at the flight breakfast was the hand-made plane built and flown in by L.A. Heuberger of El Paso, Tex. The craft, called the Doodle Bug, weighs only 616 pounds and will fly at 170-190 miles an hour with its 90 horsepower motor. Another attraction was a 1920 Fairchild KR-31 Challenger flown in by Roy Kluver of Mapleton. The biplane has a 1918 engine. Kluver found the plane being used as part of a fence in South Dakota and rebuilt it.

Brother, sister share top 4-H beef honors
A brother-sister combination – Mike and Marjorie Williams of Williams, swept the two top awards i n the annual 4-H baby beef competition yesterday at the Hamilton County fair.
Mike, 14 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Don D. Williams, walked off with the grand championship ribbon on his Angus entry while Marjorie, 9 was presented with the reserve champion honors, also on an Angus.
Doug Olson of Jewell had the grand champion FFA stair in that division of the fair judging, while Jerry Sharer, also of Jewell, had the FFA champion heifer.
Another family "act" developed in the judging for the best showmanship honors. Kristi Elliott, 14 won the junior 4-H beef showmanship award, while her sister, Beth, 19 took the senior showmanship honors. They are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Elliott of Webster City, and have consistently placed high in Hamilton County fair beef judging in previous years.

Earns national top 10 finish
Chistopher Chambers of Webster City, and his sorrel American Quarter Horse, Sheza Lopin Lena, were a top 10 two-year-old mare finalist team at the 1991 American Junior Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show, held Aug. 5-10 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Chambers placed 7th in the show. To win the title, Chambers, 12 competed against 33 contenders, ages 19 and under, who qualified for the invitational show by earning a predetermined number of points in AJQHA competition, or who were selected to represent their state, province or country. Chambers is the son of Pat and Sandy Chambers of Webster City.

League releases results for fair poll
Hamilton County residents are in favor treatment for drug abusers and banning the media from project election winners, according to the poll taken by the League of Women Voters at the Hamilton County Fair.
The poll contained six questions and asked voters to consider everything from immigration to deposits on non-carbonated beverages. According to league officials, 677 ballots were cast compared to last year with 587 ballots. The questions and poll results are as follows:
1. “Should Iowa encourage immigration to increase the state labor pool?” There were 157 yes votes and 513 no votes. Seven people did not respond to the question.
2. “Would you favor including non-carbonated beverage containers in the “Deposit Required” category? ” Of those people responding, 520 said yes, and 154 said no. There were three people who did not respond to the question.
3. “Would you favor banning the national media from projecting election-winners before the polls close-in-all states? An overwhelming 603 people were in favor of the measure, while 70 were opposed. Four did not respond.
4. “Would you favor amending the National Voter Registration Act to include a social security number as a primary requirement to vote?” There were 431 voters in favor of the change and 238 were not in favor of the amendment. Eight voters did not respond to the question.
5. “Should non-violent drug abusers be sentenced to mandatory treatment rather than prison?” A total of 521 people agreed with the proposition and 131 were not in favor. 25 people did not answer the question.
6. Should cyclists and roller bladers be banned from walking trails?” More voters were opposed to the ban, 394, while 254 felt the measure had merit. Twenty-nine people did not respond to the question.
