Christy Martinez, left and her mother Carrie Hemken created this building sized representation of the American flag during the past week.

A new patriotic representation of the American Flag is now hanging in downtown Williams, thanks to the creative efforts of Christy Martinez and her mother Carrie Hemken.

The building sized flag was created using red, white and blue bandanas that are knotted together at each corner and is now hanging on the Talcott Mercantile building.

Martinez, who lives in Casper, Wyoming has been here for the past week, to celebrate the Independence Day holiday with her parents. Before she arrived, she told her mother about the project .

“I think we should do this for the 250th celebration,” Hemken recalled.

They began tying corners together this week, and threaded a pipe through the edge of the flag so they could hang it on the building.

To install it, Hemken and other family members climbed onto the building roof to install it. The bottom ends are tied down to two milk cans in front of the store.

Hemken, who owns the building and runs the Talcott Mercantile business said she has 28 different people who sell throughout the building, with all types of businesses from boutique items to vintage pieces.

She is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hemken is hoping they are able to keep it up throughout the holiday weekend, but will probably take it down next week.

Starting at $3.46/week.
