The students from Sunset Heights are learning bike safety and etiquette, in addition to improving their bicycling skills while being led by Chad Hisler, the physical education teacher for the school. The bike program is part of a summer program that also involves working on their math and reading skills with summer fun integrated into the program.

Webster City Sunset Heights Elementary School students are making the most of summer through five exciting weeks of summer school!

Eight teachers are working with approximately 75 students as they participate in reading, math, and physical activity rotations designed to meet their individual needs and keep learning, engaging, staying active and having fun.

The students work through three one-hour sessions twice a week.

“By rotating small groups, the teachers are able to keep literacy instruction intentional and the learning fun,” Lisa Lyons, Title 1 reading interventionalist said.

Alongside their studies, a new bike program, headed by Chad Hisler, physical education teacher, is in full force.

Chad Hisler accepts the 50+ bike helmets for the new bike program at Sunset Heights Elementary School for summer session. From left to right are Sgt. Eric McKinley, Hisler, and Chief Steve Hanson.

With the help of 50+ helmets donated by the Webster City Police Department, which the kids can keep after summer session ends, they are led by Hisler on rides through Brewer Creek trails. They practice bike riding safety, etiquette and enjoy the outdoors.

Those youth who have less experience with bike riding practice their new skill on the playground under instruction and supervision by another teacher.

Coming back from their adventure, they enjoy a snack in the gym and tell stories about the ride.

“From building reading skills to strengthening math understanding and staying active through movement, our students are working hard, growing their confidence, and having a great time along the way,” Teresa Van Epps, principal of Sunset Heights said,

“We are so proud of their energy, effort, and enthusiasm for learning this summer.”

Starting at $3.46/week.
