Help Iowa families build stronger futures through co-parenting education

AMES — Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering an online course for divorced parents, “Co-Parenting for Resilience,” a court-approved, research-based program designed to help parents reduce conflict and support their children during and after separation.

Nearly one-third of children in the United States will experience their parents’ divorce before adulthood, and research shows this transition can significantly impact children’s emotional well-being, behavior and academic success.

The program provides a structured educational experience for parents who are divorcing or separating, as well as individuals seeking custody, visitation or paternity arrangements. Co-Parenting for Resilience satisfies divorce education requirements in many Iowa judicial districts and is recognized as an important step in helping families prioritize children’s well-being during legal proceedings.

The next “Co-Parenting for Resilience” online class is set for Wednesday, July 29, from 5:30-9:30 p.m.

Participants learn practical, research-informed strategies to strengthen their co-parenting relationships and better support their children. Key topics include effective co-parent communication, managing conflict and emotional responses, understanding children’s reactions to divorce, developing parenting plans and talking with children about family transitions

Courses are delivered through a live, instructor-led online format, increasing accessibility for parents across Iowa, said Malisa Rader, a health and human sciences educator with ISU Extension and Outreach.

“Parents going through separation often face high stress and uncertainty,” said David Brown, behavioral health state extension specialist. “This program provides practical, research-based tools that help parents reduce conflict and focus on what matters most — the well-being of their children.”
