A blaze on the Boone River that has been burning over this past weekend is being closely monitored by the Webster City Fire Department and the Webster City Police Department.
The smoke and fire is due to a large pile of logs that seem to have drifted downstream and piled up on the sandbar on the southwest side of the Boone River bridge near Nokomis park. A fireman who was monitoring the scene, speculated that it was probably intentionally set.
"If it was a big hazard, it would be different, but there isn't a whole lot we can do," said Harrison Hayes who was working Sunday at the fire department. Hayes has been on the fire department for 8 years. He said he has seen this happen before, and it is usually a bonfire set by individuals who were fishing on the sandbar.
The cause of this fire is undetermined at this time.
"As long as it doesn't become a real big nuisance, we will just let it burn," said Hayes.
Hayes commented that Fire Chief Chuck Stansfield felt that if the log jam fire would be put out and then the log jam moved, it would cause different problems down the stream. The logs burning themselves out seems a better solution at this time.
"We're on top of it", he said, "it's being monitored very closely."
There was no estimate for the length of time it would continue to burn.
