BLAIRSBURG — A dedicated group of sixth-grade students at Northeast Hamilton Elementary School is making a positive impact on their school community through the Iowa 4-H Youth Development Clover Power Ambassador program.

As Clover Power Ambassadors, these student leaders promote healthy living by modeling positive behaviors and encouraging their peers to make healthy choices every day. The ambassadors serve as role models for the 5-2-1-0 healthy living message: eat 5 fruits and vegetables daily, limit recreational screen time to 2 hours or less, engage in at least 1 hour of physical activity and choose 0 sugary drinks.

Throughout the school year, the ambassadors take an active role in promoting wellness among students in grades K-6. They lead monthly taste tests, share nutrition education, and organize activities that encourage healthy habits. With support from Hy-Vee, the group recently introduced students to new fruits, including pomegranates and mangoes, providing taste-testing opportunities for 162 youth.

The ambassadors also received support through an Iowa 4-H Foundation grant, which allowed them to purchase healthy snacks for their classmates during state testing week. The initiative provided nutritious snack options to help students stay focused and energized while demonstrating the importance of healthy eating during times of increased academic demand.

In addition to nutrition-focused activities, the Clover Power Ambassadors visit PreK-4th grade classrooms every Friday to lead physical activity breaks and mindfulness exercises. These weekly visits help younger students develop healthy habits while creating positive connections between grade levels.

Beyond their work within the school, Clover Power Ambassadors have opportunities to grow as leaders through Iowa 4-H Youth Development, including participation in leadership summits and educational experiences at Iowa State University.

The Clover Power Ambassador program empowers youth to become leaders in their schools and communities while promoting lifelong healthy habits. Through their dedication and service, the Northeast Hamilton ambassadors continue to make healthy living fun, engaging, and accessible for all students.
