Flag Day ceremony held Friday by American Legion Post 191

Approximately 200 American flags were taken out of service and honorably destroyed during a ceremony conducted by the American Legion Post 191 Friday. The annual event is held around Flag Day.

The flag-burning ceremony held Friday by the American Legion Post 191 members was a sobering end to the life of several hundred American flags. The actual disposal was held in the north parking lot in the 700 block.

This event is held once a year, always around Flag Day, with unserviceable flags deposited at the Legion building throughout the year. The ceremony is conducted by the leadership team of the Legion, requiring a final inspection to determine if they are unserviceable, which includes a recommendation to retire and destroy the flags with honorable rites.

The team members who performed the ceremony on Friday were Matt MacRunnel, commander; Troy Duffy, vice commander; Rich Stroner, adjutant; and Bruce Johnston, chaplain.

Members of the Legion and auxiliary take great pains to preserve and honor the flags that are in their care, including the flags that are displayed at Graceland Cemetery. Once it is determined that they are too faded, too worn and tattered, if they cannot be repaired to fly again, this final ceremony is held by the Legion members.

Several hundred flags were assembled for their final display and flames were their internment. The flags consisted of cemetery flags, ceremonial flags and privately owned flags brought in by community members.

Members of the Legion raise money throughout the year to help replace the flags that have to be replaced, and donations are always helpful. When the car shows are held during the Thursday evening Market Nights in downtown Webster City, the Legion serves food which goes towards these type of expenses.

The Webster City Fire Department was on hand to insure they were safely handled.

Starting at $3.46/week.
