The Poplar Grove speedway, operated by Tim and Holly Mortenson, will celebrate its 30th year this Saturday. Their first year for the Go Kart track was in 1996.
The Poplar Grove speedway is celebrating its 30th year of operation. Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, they will begin a full day of activities with special prizes to celebrate each year of operation.
The first year for the Go Kart track was in 1996, and today averages 12 to 14 races per year.
Owned by Tim and Holly Mortenson, the couple has made it a priority to keep the track family friendly.
“We focus on kids learning the basics about go karting and helping them grow in racing as they grow in age,” said Holly Mortenson.
Nestled between fields of corn and beans, the racetrack is named after it’s address, 2730 Poplar Grove in Kamrar. The dirt go-kart track is designed for racers of all ages and skill levels.
According to the Mortensons, on an average race day they have 50 to 70 entries. This weekend they anticipate as many as 100 entries. As many as 500 to 600 people normally take part in the events between racing and watching the events.
The speedway was established with family in mind.
“We were inspired by our sons for go-kart racing,” said Tim Mortenson. The track allowed them, and the entire community of Kamrar a place to race close to home.
The Mortensons make it a priority to hiring people locally, for everything from announcing to photography.
“This Saturday, in celebration of our anniversary, there is a full day of activities.”said Holly Mortenson.
Anyone can come and watch activities free from the south hill.
