The Webster City Area Chamber of Commerce extends its sincere appreciation to the Daily Freeman-Journal for hosting April’s Third Thursday Coffee. Attendees were given an inside look at one of Webster City’s most historic and influential businesses, first established in 1857.

The tour highlighted the impressive scope of the Daily Freeman-Journal’s operations. While widely known as Webster City’s trusted local newspaper, the facility also prints 84 community newspapers from across Iowa–right from its downtown location–reaching nearly every corner of the state.

Attendees learned about the capabilities of the printing press, which produces 6,000 copies per hour under normal conditions and can increase to 9,000 copies per hour during high-demand periods. The press operates entirely on-air compression, demonstrating an innovative and efficient approach to large-scale production.

The operation requires approximately 9,000 printing plates each month, and ink is refilled on an industrial scale. Notably, the ink used is 100% soy-based, reflecting environmentally conscious practices.

In addition to printing, the Daily Freeman-Journal includes departments in editorial, reporting, advertising, digital processing, press operations, and administration. The organization employs 25 team members, many of whom have dedicated decades of service, with some continuing family legacies within the company.

Among the notable staff are Angie Anderson, Plant Manager and Chamber Ambassador, who has been with the organization for more than 25 years, and community editor, Kolleen Taylor, who works tirelessly to continue on the great tradition.

A unique historical note shared during the tour revealed the publication’s name is rooted in abolitionist history. One of its founding partners was a strong advocate against slavery, using the newspaper as a platform to take a stand.

Today, the Daily Freeman-Journal continues to be an award-winning publication, earning 17 journalism and industry awards this year alone, and remains a vital source of information for Webster City and surrounding communities.

Community members can access local news in three convenient ways: by subscribing to the printed newspaper, visiting the website at www.freemanjournal.net, or downloading the DFJ mobile app.

The Chamber also extends a special thank you to Mornin’ Glory Coffee for providing coffee for the event and helping create a welcoming atmosphere for attendees.
