Legislative Forum at Iowa Central-Webster City campus on Saturday

Forum begins at 11 a.m. in Tom Chelesvig building; Sen. Dennis Guth and Rep. Shannon Latham to participate

Saturday will be the first local opportunity of 2026 for community members to ask questions of its lawmakers during a political forum co-hosted by the Iowa Central Community College, the Hamilton County Growth Partnership and the Daily Freeman-Journal.

If the weather holds out.

Several forums have been attempted earlier this year, but have been cancelled due to poor travel conditions.

Iowa Sen. Dennis Guth, R-Klemme, and state Rep. Shannon Latham, R-Sheffield, will participate in the forum, which will be moderated by Jim Kersten, vice president of External Affairs and Government Relations for Iowa Central Community College.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to noon in Room 106 of the Chelesvig Center at the Webster City campus of Iowa Central Community College, 1725 Beach St., Webster City.

Attendees will be asked to write their questions on cards. The questions will then be read by a moderator.

Latham, who is serving her third term in Iowa’s House. She has recently announced that she will not be running for another term. Her term expires January 10, 2027. She will be taking on a new role as executive director of the Iowa FFA Foundation.

Latham was first elected in 2020 and has held leadership roles, including chair of the Economic Development Appropriations Subcommittee. She will continue to serve House District 55, which includes Franklin and Hamilton Counties, until January 2027.

According to her official government profile, she is co-owner of Latham Quality, Inc. of Alexander. She received her B.S. in agricultural journalism and public service and administration in agriculture from Iowa State University, earning an M.B.A. from the University of Iowa.

She has been the inaugural chair of American Seed Trade Association’s Communications Committee, is a past board member of John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and Agricultural Entrepreneurial Initiative at Iowa State University.

Latham is married to John, and has a daughter and son.

Guth, a farmer at Guth Farms, Inc., is in his third term in the Iowa Senate.

He is a former president of Hancock County Farm Bureau and Klemme Area Development Organization and member of Hancock County Pork Producers Board, according to his official government web page. He is also a past member of the Board of Directors for The Family Leader. He is also co-founder of Let Us Vote Iowa.

He received his B.S. in agricultural mechanization from Iowa State University.

Guth is married to Margaret and reside on their family farm outside Klemme. They have two sons, three daughters and 13 grandchildren.
