Beau Klaver spoke at the council meeting Monday night announcing his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the House District 55 seat.
Beau Klaver announced to the city council of Webster City Monday night that he will be running for the Iowa House of Representatives, District 55 seat. The primary for this seat will be held on June 2.
He will be running against two other candidates in the primary. Also running for the Republican nomination for the House seat are Kurtis Bower of Roland and Brian Young of Stanhope. Bryson Zabel, who had qualified to run, announced Tuesday that he is withdrawing from the Republican primary. Cynthia Oppedal Paschen is running on the Democratic ticket.
The district this serves includes Hamilton, Franklin, northwest Story and southeast Wright counties.
“I am proud to say that I am a sixth generation farmer of Hamilton County and created a Precision Drone Business, BK Air,” said Klaver. “Through this, I have learned the many facets and skills needed to run a small business within Iowa.”
“In the past couple of months I have learned the extensive process of legislation within the state of Iowa,” he said. “I have been able to get a firsthand view of what it takes to work with other legislators to handle important issues for our state. I think if you want to be a good legislator, you need to be in the public, and listen to what people are saying.”
Klaver graduated from Webster City High School in 2022, growing up on a small family farm near Kamrar. He is finalizing his degree at Iowa State University in Agricultural Studies this spring.
He is also working full-time at the Iowa Senate as a clerk for Senator Annette Sweeney.
Klaver feels younger people need to get involved with the political process.
“I think bringing some young voices would be very beneficial. I’ve had a chance to sit in the back and learn how to deal with other legislators,” he explained.”I’ve been able to see what it takes to work with other people. I feel you need a strong skill set to be able to work with people on both sides of the aisle. Senator Sweeney has allowed me to gain lots of knowledge while working down at the legislature.”
“I believe in the future of Iowa agriculture and rural communities,” said Klaver in a press release announcing his candidacy. “I’m proud to announce that I am running to keep rural communities strong and support Iowa’s next generation, ensuring they have a prosperous future here in our state.”
Several issues he is running on include programs for aspiring farmers in Iowa.
“I am also running to revitalize the beginning farmer programs with the Iowa Finance Authority,” he continued. “Additionally, I’m a big advocate of the Choose Iowa Program to provide local and healthy food options.”
Klaver served as the president of the largest agricultural student run philanthropy group, the Bacon Expo in 2024, at Iowa State University and was the philanthropy chair for tAlpha Gamma Rho.
He was awarded the Carolyn Ullestad Unsung Hero Award through Iowa State University in 2024.
His family is still living in Hamilton County. His parents are Jerry and Patrice Klaver, who live on the family farm in the Kamrar area.
