WCHS students go to speech contest, compete again this weekend
The Webster City High School sent three entries to the High School district speech competition in Mason City at the John Adams Middle School.
Two of these entries qualified for state competition at Waterloo West High School.
The entries were from senior Brooklyn Neddemeyer, who submitted a short film entry called “The Oakley Five.” It was a found footage style horror film which she wrote, starred in, directed and cast. She has done the short film entries for the last four years.
The cast members of this film included Neddermeyer, Bria Wallerich, Aiden Haman, Paisyn Bare, Maja Gordoon, Jasmin Venegas, Max Anderson, Delaney Lyons, Regan Blaiwsdell, Camdyn Coons, Alivia Hector, Jackson Meyer, Sylvia Otteros and Ava Ely. They received at 2 rating at state.
The radio broadcasting entry came from seniors Evy Streigl, Alaina Powgnas and Valeria Terrones-Rodriguez. Their radio piece, “3 Peas in a Podcast,” earned a one at districts and qualified for state. The three wrote the script and recorded their final product. The young women wrote a current events based piece in the style of a commentary podcast. When they attended the state competition, they had re-recorded their dialogue and improved their sound editing. They earned an overall 2 (1, 2, 2) at state.
The third entry was a one-act play, one of the two put on by the drama department last semester, called “How to Get Away With A Murder Mystery” by Don Zolidis.
The play was directed by Brooklyn Neddermeyer and starred Alaina Powgnas, Jack Barner, Rinoa Raygor, Aiden Haman, Ash Tinoco, Ava Campbell, Ava Ely, Kyla Van Demark, Ava Orr, Alivia Hector, Abigail Heckert, Max Anderson, and Bryce Hrnicek, with Bria Wallerich and Evy Striegl serving as competition stage crew.
They earned an overall 1 (1, 1, 1) at districts. The one act play is the only event with 3 judges at the district level. At state competition they earned an overall 1 rating (2, 1, 1).
Many of the students above will be competing in the individual speech district competition at Forest City High School this Saturday.
Spectators are allowed at this event, but all are asked to not wear WCHS gear when they come out to support us. Everyone who earns a 1 at districts will move on to state at Maquoketa Valley High School on March 14. The speech coaches who guide the students through these competitions are Emma Bertrand and Hayley Hartman.
