The Flower Cart: where the flowers bloom year-round

Tim Huff stands in the midst of his plants after Valentine's Day. He and his wife have owned the retail business for over 30 years. Even though the holiday has passed, he reminds his customers, it's never too late to send flowers and tell someone they are loved.

For the past 65 years, The Flower Cart has served as the western anchor to downtown Webster City, sitting at the corner of Second and Prospect.

The business began in 1961, and has had several owners over the years, but the ones who have owned it the longest have been Tim and Julie Huff who bought the business in 1992 from Gary and Marilyn Bridger.

The Huffs purchased the building about 10 years later from Verne Ratcliff. It’s easy to remember the transaction, said Huff, he bought it knowing it needed a roof. So shortly after they purchased it, they had it replaced. And after nearly 35 years, they just had to replace it again.

The Huffs have continuously operated the floral shop, surviving the many ups and downs of the economy. The biggest challenges hit with the closure of Frigidaire, and then again with COVID.

Huff admits they have never recovered completely from those two events.

The business has changed dramatically — even getting the merchandise, the flowers and plants.

“We used to have five employees,” said Huff, “Now it’s just my wife and me.”

The week after Valentine’s Day is relatively quiet now, but it’s normally one of the busiest days of the year.

Huff said the weekend Valentine’s Days are not as profitable for their business.

“We hire extra help for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day,” he said. This year, they were gone by noon.

Those extra hands are used for delivery; Huff and his wife do all the arrangements, clean the flowers and do most of the deliveries.

He has two phone lines, one that he can answer even when delivering. It also tells him that when his phone rings, it is busy in the shop.

There have been many changes in their business during those last 30-plus years.

“We do more phone and Internet business,” he said, “Probably 60 to 70% of the orders now come through the internet.”

The many changes in the business world have made them modify their business to adapt.

“It’s a lot harder to get stuff to sell; it’s harder to find items I used to get easily,” he said.

“I used to have four suppliers and bought from them all, with deliveries every two weeks,” he continued, “Now I only have one.”

The Huffs have maintained a great business model and always share a cheery smile. They take care of their business, they take care of their building, they take care of each other.

Huff has been known to take an order in the midst of a delivery, in the middle of the street, or while shopping in a store. Once they know you, they make everything easy.

They take care of their customers.

And the flowers bloom all year round.

Starting at $3.46/week.
