Daily Freeman Journal receives additional awards in advertising, features, design and web page

At the Iowa Newspaper Association Convention last Thursday, additional awards were presented that were not mentioned in the Monday edition of the newspaper.

Jane Curtis and Bob Oliver were recognized for other work presented during the evening. Curtis was recognized for a simple but clean editorial page, earning second place.

The feature pages submitted also drew positive comments, noting the use of a clean layout and strong writing, again coming in second due to a stronger layout of the newspaper in the first-place publication.

The newspaper website was also acknowledged, earning second place with the abbreviated edition of the DFJ. Trevor Christensen, the advertising director for Webster City; Jane Curtis, former editor; and Nick Manwarren worked together on content. Manwarren is responsible for the website design and balance, and works out of the Fort Dodge office.

A third-place award was also presented to Oliver and Curtis for best continuing coverage.

Additional awards in advertising included second-place awards for the best ad featuring financial, insurance or other professional services, and third place for ads featuring grocery, food or entertainment, and for best ad featuring automotive, boats, aircraft, tires and gasoline.

The Daily Freeman Journal is considered a multi-day publication and was judged against others in the same classification. The Freeman Journal is the smallest of the daily newspapers in this class, which is measured by circulation and population.

Some of the other winners in other categories in that classification were the Iowa Falls Daily Citizen, the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the Waterloo Courier and the Clinton Herald.

Starting at $3.46/week.
