Newly-elected City Council members are expected to be sworn in tonight

$800,000 concrete street repair plan proposed for 2026

Terms of three members of the City Council of Webster City will come to an end December 31, 2025: those of John Hawkins, Matt McKinney and Logan Welch.

Hawkins was returned to the Council in November’s election; McKinney and Welch, both of whom decided not to run, will step down at year’s end.

Tonight’s Council meeting is expected to see the swearing-in of Hawkins, and new Council members Ashley Allers and John Marvel. Under Webster City’s form of government, a mayor is chosen from, and by, members of Council.

Another important item on tonight’s agenda is a proposal to award a contract for $831,600 to TK Concrete, Inc., of Pella, the apparent qualified low bidder for concrete patching and manhole adjustments at locations on 17 Webster City streets. If approved, the project would see construction begin in April 2026, with projected completion in late July.

The city is pausing its aggressive, multiple-year effort in hot melt asphalt paving to focus on concrete street repairs in 2026. The city has relatively few concrete streets, as other, less expensive materials are adequate for existing traffic on most streets in Webster City. Concrete is typically specified for high-traffic streets or ones that see heavy truck traffic, loading or unloading. Concrete streets, correctly supported by an adequate roadbed, can last 30 years.

A third agenda item proposes to hold a public hearing as a first reading to consider adding new 35 mph and 45 mph speed limit zones on Mackinlay Kantor Drive, from James Street to the city’s north corporate limit. The new zones are being recommended by the Traffic Committee after a resident expressed concern about the speed of present traffic in the area.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the council chambers, City Hall, 400 Second Street, downtown Webster City. All City Council meetings of Webster City are open to the public.

Starting at $3.46/week.
