Van Diest Medical Center has welcomed a new volunteer who is already bringing smiles throughout the facility — Tedwin, a certified therapy dog.

While VDMC is fortunate to have many dedicated volunteers, Tedwin proudly holds the title of the organization’s only four-legged helper.

Tedwin, a 4-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, visits VDMC each Wednesday alongside his handler, Toni Deal. Certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Tedwin spends his visits greeting patients and their families in inpatient rooms, stopping by waiting areas at Van Diest Medical Center and the Family Health Clinic, and making time to visit with staff across all departments. During the holiday season, Tedwin adds to the festive spirit by donning a Santa hat, beard and holiday tie — spreading even more cheer, comfort, and smiles wherever he goes.

Chantal Sefcik, manager of the med/surg department, has also witnessed the difference Tedwin makes.

“I am honored to see firsthand how impactful our new therapy dog, Tedwin, has been for our patients,” Sefcik said. “Many of our patients have been away from home for weeks at a time, and some are simply not feeling well or are very ill. Spending time with Tedwin, whether sitting in their laps or resting beside them in bed, brings immediate, visible comfort and joy.”

“There is something truly special about a visit from a dog that instantly lifts spirits,” she said.

Staff members say Tedwin’s presence has a meaningful impact on both patients and employees. “My mood instantly brightens when I turn the corner and see Tedwin sitting there,” said Abbie Hansen of the VDMC business office. “We are so lucky to have him here and to get all the fluffy love from him.”

With each weekly visit, Tedwin continues to remind patients, families, and staff that sometimes the simplest comforts — a gentle presence and a wagging tail — can make the biggest difference.
