Hawkins, Marvel, Allers

John Hawkins

Voters on Tuesday returned Webster City Mayor John Hawkins to the City Council, giving him 734 votes.

Hawkins, who has served on the Council for 12 years, said before the election that he still had work to do.

He was 120 miles west of Baltimore, Maryland, when the Daily Freeman-Journal told him he had been re-elected. Hawkins was driving there in connection with his nationwide trucking business.

“Thanks to everyone for a chance to work for you for another four years,” Hawkings said. “I’m proud to serve you again, and to work, both with our present and new members of the City Council.”

But it was newcomer John Marvel who ruled at the polls with 882 votes.

Marvel, a business owner and entrepreneur who has long family ties to Webster City, had said he was looking forward to helping move Webster City forward.

“It’s a special night for sure,” Marvel, who owns Mornin’ Glory Coffee Shop, said. “I’m honored and I’m humbled. As I said throughout my campaign, I’ve heard many times that Webster City’s best days are behind it, but I don’t believe that. I’m excited to see what the new council can do, and ready to get to work.”

Also elected to the City Council of Webster City was Ashley Allers, with 760 votes. Allers, chief financial officer of Van Diest Medical Center, said, “Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I’m excited at the opportunity to serve everyone in the city.”
