Supervisors set September 9 for hearing on sale of former Bliss site

The Hamilton County Board of Supervisors will officially roll out the process of selling the site of the former Bliss Cancer Center with a public hearing on September 9.

The hearing will be held at 9 a.m. at the Hamilton County Courthouse.

The 6,616-square-foot building was constructed in 2001. It sits on 1.75 acres of land.

Hamilton County purchased the property from Trinity Regional Medical Center in 2016 and had been renting it to DHS for office space.

The property is valued at $981,320, according to the Hamilton County assessor’s office online records.

As part of a spring of 2024 agreement between the county and the City of Webster City, the city retains a first right of refusal option should the county decide to sell the building. That agreement centered on the control of the adjacent Wilson Brewer Park, which is part of an original Brewer-Bonebright gift to Webster City, given by the grandchildren of the city’s founder, Wilson Brewer.

The City of Webster City owns the park.

The county owns land adjacent to the park, a portion of which is now a parking area. Another portion is the building that the supervisors now wish to sell.

The 2024 agreement between the city and the county provides an easement for the park to use the existing parking areas.

The property on which the office building sits was part of the original land gift from the Brewer-Bonebrights. At some point in its history, that property moved from being public property to being sold to a private business.

Also during its meeting Tuesday:

— The supervisors agreed to sell a small portion of property adjacent to the county facility in Jewell to the Barkema family for $1. Board Chairman Rick Young said that the family has been maintaining the parcel for decades.

— Hamilton County Public Health Administrator Pam Harklau announced that Public Health would conduct a “late night” clinic for immunizations today, from 4 to 6 p.m. It will hold a similar clinic after the Labor Day holiday, she said. Public Health is located at 1610 Collins Street, Suite 1, Webster City.

Starting at $3.46/week.
