St. Thomas Aquinas will celebrate 125th anniversary
The cornerstone set in 1900 says to ‘Rejoice,’ and that’s just what members, former members, and guests will be doing on Sunday, September 21, when St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Webster City celebrates its quasquicentennial.
“Jubelate Deo Omnis Terra” were the words chosen by Father T. J. O’Brien, who became pastor of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Webster City in 1898. St. Peter’s was located about a block north of the Hamilton County Fairgrounds on Bluff Street. It was Father O’Brien who oversaw the construction of the new St. Thomas Aquinas Church. The cornerstone was set on July 3, 1900.
“Rejoice to God, all the earth,” or “Shout joyfully to the Lord, all you lands,” is today’s translation of the cornerstone verse that comes from Psalm 100. And rejoicing there will be with the 125th anniversary celebration that will begin with a10 a.m. Mass, followed by a lasagna dinner with all the trimmings. There will be a chance to share memories and see the church as it has been renovated in recent years with angels painted high above the altar and décor that honors the church’s long history. Those who have not been inside for many years will find it transformed, with touches that may remind them of how it was 50 years ago or more.
All are invited to join and “Rejoice” with the St. Thomas community as it celebrates this milestone.
