Hamilton County supervisors expect to initiate the sale process of the former Bliss building

The Hamilton County Board of Supervisors expect today to initiate the process of selling the former Bliss Cancer Center building at 1900 Superior Street, Webster City.

The Supervisors will meet today at the Hamilton County Courthouse, 2300 Superior Street, Webster City.

This meeting begins at 9 a.m.

According to the meeting agenda, the supervisors plan to set a date and time for a public hearing for the purpose of setting in motion the sale of the building that most recently housed Department of Human Services offices.

The 6,616-square-foot building was constructed in 2001. It sits on 1.75 acres of land.

Hamilton County purchased the property from Trinity Regional Medical Center in 2016 and had been renting it to DHS for office space. Now, however, those services have been consolidated by the county into the Shashi building, which also houses Hamilton County Public Health and other related county services.

The property is valued at $981,320, according to the Hamilton County assessor’s office online records.

As part of a spring of 2024 agreement between the county and the City of Webster City, the city retains a first right of refusal option should the county decide to sell the building. That agreement centered on the control of the adjacent Wilson Brewer Park, which is part of an original Brewer-Bonebright gift to Webster City, given by the grandchildren of the city’s founder, Wilson Brewer.

The City of Webster City owns the park.

The county owns land adjacent to the park, a portion of which is now a parking area. Another portion is the building that the supervisors now wish to sell.

The 2024 agreement between the city and the county provides an easement for the park to use the existing parking areas.

The property on which the office building sits was part of the original land gift from the Brewer-Bonebrights. At some point in its history, that property moved from being public property to being sold to a private business.
