Area families are invited to cast a line and connect with local law enforcement during the annual Cops & Bobbers Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the Small Beach Shelter in Briggs Woods Park. This free event is open to the public and takes place during the Iowa DNR Free Fishing Weekend (June 6-8), meaning no fishing licenses are required for Iowa residents.

Event Details:

– Date: Saturday, June 7, 2025

– Rain Date: Sunday, June 8, 2025

– Registration: 8:30 to 9 a.m.

Hosted in partnership with Hamilton County Law Enforcement Officers, this community outreach event is designed for children ages 3-14, although parents are welcome to fish alongside their children. – How to maintain a fishing pole

– Fish identification and Iowa fishing regulations

– Water safety tips and more

“We want to help kids get hooked on fishing — not drugs or crime,” says Deputy Ryan Rupiper, one of the event coordinators. “This is about building trust, breaking down barriers, and showing law enforcement in a positive and approachable way.”

Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear and bait. Limited equipment may be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
