Jones is sentenced to life in prison
FORT DODGE — The Fort Dodge man accused of killing his father and dumping his body in a ditch will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Alec Jones, 26, was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of his father, 55-year-old Dennis Jones earlier this year.
Jones was sentenced Tuesday in Webster County Court by Judge John Haney. Alec Jones’ mother, Shannon, gave a short statement asking the judge to show him mercy and stated that her son is “a good boy.”
In August, a jury deliberated for two hours before finding Jones guilty of first-degree murder
According to Webster County attorneys, Jones admitted to investigators that he shot his father and also admitted to carrying a Smith & Wesson 9 mm gun with a flashlight attachment which was seen on video in state’s evidence. Attorneys said Dennis Jones “was hunted and killed by Alec Jones” and referred to text and Facebook messages sent by Jones to his brother, Nathan, that “someone was going to end up dead that night.”
Defense attorneys argued that the gun was not owned by Alec Jones, but by Nathan. Jones’ attorneys also argued that Dennis Jones had high levels of methamphetamine and amphetamines in his bloodstream which made him violent at the time and stated that Dennis Jones had previously attacked Alec with a hammer.
The trial of Alec Jones’ younger brother, Nathan, is scheduled to begin in May.
