FD men arrested on weapons, assault charges
Police say weapon fired in ‘self defense’
Two Fort Dodge men have been arrested in Hamilton County after a fight led to a weapon being fired from a vehicle early Friday morning.
According to the Webster City Police Department, Tanner James Spencer, 27, of Fort Dodge, was arrested near the Webster City Veterinary Clinic on the east side of town shortly after 9 a.m. Two firearms and ammunition were found in his vehicle at the time of the arrest.
Following an investigation, Webster City Police determined that Spencer was involved in an altercation with William Charles Ervin Curtis, 53, also of Fort Dodge. The altercation escalated when Spencer pulled out a handgun and cycled a round into the chamber in an attempt to deter Curtis, police reported. It continued when Spencer discharged the handgun in what officers say was “an act of self-defense.”
Spencer has been charged with discharging a firearm in city limits, a simple misdemeanor. Curtis is charged with simple assault, also a simple misdemeanor.
No one was injured when the gun was fired.
