High speed chase ends in front of Hamilton County recorder’s house

A high speed chase in Hamilton County Saturday ended with a wrecked car in the ditch in front of the Hamilton County recorder’s home.

Kim Anderson said Tuesday she was watching as the chase ended, hoping the speeding car wouldn’t hit her house.

The crash at Stagecoach and Big Bear roads seriously injured the driver, who was identified as Jared Ahrens, 33, of Kelley, according to Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Timmons.

The chase started with a 911 call to Hamilton County Dispatch shortly before 5 p.m. reporting a speeding silver Chevrolet Cruze weaving in and out of traffic on U.S. Highway 20, Timmons said. Dispatch was told the vehicle, at the 133 mile marker eastbound, had almost caused several accidents. That mile marker is in western Hamilton County.

Timmons said Hamilton County deputies located the vehicle stopped on the shoulder at the 139 mile marker and were in the process of determining if the driver was intoxicated when Ahrens drove off.

The pursuit left Highway 20, going onto county blacktops south of it, Timmons reported.

He said Tuesday that the car went through an intersection that crossed Iowa Highway 17 without stopping for the stop sign.

“During the pursuit the driver failed to stop at multiple stop signs and attempted to hit several vehicles head on during the pursuit,” Timmons reported. “Speeds during the pursuit were in excess of 100 mph.”

Ahrens lost control of the car as it went off onto a gravel road, where it rolled right in front of Anderson’s home.

Ahrens was transported to Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City by Stratford Fire and Rescue before being taken to a Des Moines hospital by air ambulance for treatment of his injuries.

His condition is unknown at this time.

Anderson, who works for the county alongside the law enforcement officers who were involved, said Tuesday, “In 60 seconds there were five cars.”

She added, “It was neat to see how professional it was.”

The accident remains under investigation and charges are pending.
