Poppies for sale

LuAnn Jackson and Pat Nokes, standing left and right, watch Dan Campidilli sign a proclamation designating Friday, May 24, as Poppy Day in Hamilton County. Campidilli, chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Supervisors, is joined by fellow supervisors Rick Young, center, and Jerry Kloberdanz.

Jackson and Nokes are members of the American Legion Post 191 Auxiliary. Auxiliary members will be selling poppies on Friday and Saturday at Fareway and Hy-Vee grocery stores in Webster City.

National Poppy Day is observed each year the Friday before Memorial Day. The tradition of wearing a red poppy began following World War I. Red poppies bloomed on the battlefields in France and Belgium.
