Jewell girl, 10, is raising money for a cool new pool

JEWELL — One dollar at a time, Bailey Miller is helping her town build a new pool.

The Jewell girl, 10, with the help of her grandmother, Susan Klein, is selling book markers to raise money in support of SHAPE — South Hamilton Area Pool & Exercise.

“What is more fun than reading a book poolside in the summer?” Hamilton County Supervisor Rick Young asked in a media release. “Bailey and all her friends say ‘It’s a cool idea,’ which matches the SHAPE tagline Keep South Hamilton Cool, Build the Pool.”

Miller, a South Hamilton student, and Klein have made 50 book markers so far. They have orders for 106.

“At a dollar donated from each $3 purchase, that puts the fund $106 closer to reaching the $4 million goal,” Young said.

“Oh, $4 million dollars you say. Please don’t ever tell someone, particularly our young people, that it can’t be done,” Young continued. “They will hear that too many times in the future. Besides, SHAPE currently has commitments for over $1.1 million. So Bailey and her friends are over 25% of the goal.”

Miller’s mom, Shannon, is apparently concerned that the task of creating book markers could become overwhelming when you read this story.

“Don’t worry mom,” Miller said, “there are more dreamers out there waiting to help.”

She also wants people to know that if they’d like to help Jewell build its pool, they can send donations to: SHAPE, 701 Main Street, Jewell, IA 50130.
