Man airlifted after ATV hits parked truck

A Webster City man was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital Monday evening after he drove his ATV into the rear of a parked pickup truck.

Charles Daniel McFarland, 51, was seriously hurt in the accident.

First reported as a hit and run about 5 p.m. Monday, McFarland drove away from the collision in front of 1009 First Street. A witness told Webster City Police the ATV ran into the back of the unoccupied pickup “then took off west on First Street.”

Minutes later, the driver of the ATV called authorities saying he had been in an accident and needed an ambulance, police reported.

“He was parked at 1410 Second Street in the south alley,” Officer Dan Watkins reported. “When I arrived he was sitting in the driver’s seat of the ATV and admitted hitting the truck.”

Watkins said the driver identified himself as McFarland.

“He said he was distracted with checking for air leaks in the hood he installed over the seating area and wasn’t paying attention.”

McFarland had an open gash in his left knee with the bone exposed “that was bleeding profusely, his left forearm was broken and bleeding, and he was showing signs of head trauma.”

Webster City Fire was called to use the Jaws of Life hydraulic tool to help safely remove McFarland from his vehicle.

He told the officer he had consumed three beers earlier, the last one being consumed about an hour and a half before the accident, Watkins reported.

McFarland was airlifted to MercyOne in Des Moines from Van Diest Medical Center.

The parked truck he reportedly hit is registered to Douglas Nicholson, Watkins said in his report.
