Webster City school board to make up snow dates in April, May

When the snow flies and comes down substantially, schools call off classes to ensure safety for its student populace, faculty and supporting staff.

The only caveat is that those days would need to be made up toward the end of the school year. It’s something that every student dreads.

Fortunately, students within the Webster City Community School District can mark their final day of school for May 26 – a three-hour early out. The only catch is that students will have four full days of school rather than four early dismissals.

Those four days came about from the Webster Community School District Board of Directors, as they gave the proverbial thumbs up to the Snow Day Makeup Proposal on Monday evening in the board of the Webster City Schools Administration Building, 820 Des Moines St. in Webster City.

Dr. Mandy Ross, Webster City superintendent, stated that the district didn’t miss as many days as districts located in northern Iowa. Overall, WCCSD had four snow days and seven late starts.

Ross also cited that having kids return to classes following the Memorial Day weekend,

“It’s been a work in progress for a little while,” said Dr. Mandy Ross. “It’s addressing the fact that we have four snow days and seven late starts because of the weather.”

Teachers will wrap up their year at the end of the first week of June. With four contract days to make up, June 1 and June 2 were added as professional development days.

For paraeducators, they will have five contract days to make up.

Those came from four snow days and one day from August, due to the timing of the Kickoff Breakfast.

The meeting had updates from the Mentoring Program, while the school board approved of a surplus tax that could pay off the district’s current debt and fully merge Webster City with Northeast Hamilton.

Starting at $3.46/week.
