Jury finds Westrum not guilty

A Hamilton County jury has found Mark Westrum not guilty of second-degree sexual abuse.

The Stratford man had been accused of molesting a girl during a pool party at a home in Webster City sometime during the summer of 2001.

Jury deliberations began at 9 a.m. Wednesday; at about 10:05 a.m., it returned with its verdict.

Westrum, 69, was charged on Dec. 17, 2019, according to Iowa Courts Online.

The incident was alleged to have taken place during a pool party attended by members of a church at a private residence with about 50 people in attendance, according to court records.

Bethany Currie, district court judge, presided.

Pat Chambers, Hamilton County attorney, and Israel Kodiaga, of the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, prosecuted.

The defense attorneys were Scott Michels and Robert Rehkemper.

Westrum’s initial court appearance was Dec. 24, 2019. He was subsequently released without bail.

He filed a written arraignment and plea of not guilty on Jan. 10, 2020.
