School of the Wild

Students learn in the great outdoors

Students take part in a prey and predator game as they learned about the animals of the area. The students had to avoid the predators and then try to figure out who the predators were.

Fifth graders from Webster City Middle School and Northeast Hamilton spent Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week exploring Briggs Woods Park during School of the Wild. The students learned about the outdoors, animals native to Iowa and this area, as well as some of the history of Iowa and Hamilton County. Various stations were set up around the park with different activities at each. Students had a chance to cast lines into Briggs Woods Lake to try their hand at catching fish. They also learned about animal sounds, tracks and pelts from Naturalist John Laird. At other stations, students built birdhouses and learned how to build shelters. There were also hikes through the park and students had a chance to throw an atlatl, a native American throwing stick.
