Garner man charged following pursuit on I-35

A Garner man was arrested early Monday morning following a pursuit on Interstate 35 involving deputies from three counties, including Hamilton County.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call from an individual reporting he was being followed and he feared for his safety. The individual was southbound on Interstate 35 and was just entering Hamilton County.

Hamilton County Deputies located the vehicle southbound on I-35 at the 150-mile marker. Deputies initiated a traffic stop and the vehicle failed to stop. Hamilton County Communications Center placed a call back to the individual and he was instructed to stop for the pursuing deputies. The individual refused to cooperate and terminated the call.

According to Sheriff Doug Timmons, the same individual was the subject involved in an attempt to locate and a welfare check of himself and his child. Information was also obtained that the individual was possibly armed.

The vehicle continued southbound on I -35 and entered Story County. Story County Sheriff’s Office attempted to use stop sticks at the 102-mile marker southbound. The vehicle continued southbound and entered Polk County and was stopped at Second Avenue East in Polk County. The subject was taken into custody without incident and the child was located and was uninjured.

The driver was identified as Braden Alan Johnson, 34 of Garner. Johnson was charged with eluding (felony), unlawful possession of a prescription drug (serious misdemeanor), child endangerment (Felony), weapons charges and reckless driving (simple misdemeanor).

Johnson is currently being held in the Hamilton County Jail. Other charges are pending an investigation.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Story County Sheriff’s Office, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Department of Human Services.
