Names of students who died in boating accident released

JEWELL — The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State University Police Department have identified the two students who died in a boating accident Sunday morning at Little Wall Lake.

Yaakov Ben-David, 20, a sophomore accounting major from Washington, D.C.

Derek Nanni, 19, a freshman chemistry major from Normal, Illinois died in the incident.

The boat capsized at about 9:27 a.m. Sunday. The accident threw five members of the ISU Crew Club into the lake. Three of them were rescued and were treated at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. They were later released. Their names are not being released to protect their privacy, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Timmons. More information will be released when the investigation and the university’s internal review is complete.

One body was recovered Sunday morning and the other was found Monday by the Story County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and personnel from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office reported that firefighters from Ventura used advanced sonar technology to help find the body recovered Monday.

Crew is a rowing sport in which groups of two to eight people row long narrow boats.

The web page for the ISU club lists Little Wall Lake as a regular practice location. The university confirmed that club members were practicing there when their boat capsized.
