Local officials warn of Social Security scam

Police: Don't give personal information over the phone

The Webster City Police Department, in cooperation with the Hamilton County Attorney’s Office, wants to alert the community to a Social Security scam.

According to officials, this scam has someone call and state there is a problem with your social security number. They often ask for you to give your Social Security number and other personal information to the caller to “compare” with their records. Often times, these calls come from phone numbers that appear to be local.

Officials warn local residents to not to give out any personal information over the phone.

“Under no circumstances should you cooperate with the caller or provide them with any information,” according to Police Chief Shiloh Mork. The Social Security Administration does not conduct business over the telephone, and they do not request personal information over the telephone.

Area residents who believe they may have fallen victim to this scam or any other scam are asked to notify local law enforcement.
