Relay for Life canceled

Online auction scheduled to raise funds at the local level

— Daily Freeman-Journal file photo In 2017, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Hamilton County was held around Twin Parks in Webster City. This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic still active in Iowa, the relay has been canceled, according to organizers. An online auction will be held in lieu of the walk to raise cancer research funds.

The committee for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Hamilton County announced Tuesday that an in-person event will not be held this year.

“We were hoping we could have it in August, but the American Cancer Society and we as a Committee felt we couldn’t do it safely. However, since cancer hasn’t stopped and neither can we,” the committee said in a statement.

“We will be doing other things to raise money for cancer patients, research, etc. We are having a virtual silent auction on our Facebook page,” the statement said.

Different items up for bid will be added every couple of days at the Facebook page Relay for Life of Hamilton County, Iowa. The highest bid will win the item.

The auction will continue until items are gone. Make sure to click on posts.

To donate a new item, please message the Facebook page. The committee will arrange a time for pick up and delivery by mid-August.

T-shirts will be for sale shortly, as well.

Cold, bottled water will be available at the Stanhope Block Party Saturday, Aug. 29 for a freewill donation. Doors open at 7p.m. And the concert starts at 8 p.m. Water will be available until it run out.

The committee offered thanks for the support as they try to raise funds for a world without cancer. Donations can also be sent to Pat Nokes, 992 Buxton Dr. Webster City, IA 50595. Please make checks out to American Cancer Society.
