Free volunteer tax preparation available in WC

Free tax preparation by IRS-certified volunteers is available again this year in Webster City and Ellsworth. Federal and Iowa tax returns are prepared and filed electronically. All tax work is done by appointment. Appointments are now available on Saturdays; call (515)297-3717 to schedule your appointment.

Most taxpayers with income reported on W-2 or 1099 forms can have their returns done by the volunteers. Volunteers do not prepare returns with farm or rental income, or in certain other complex situations. Taxpayers with business or self-employment income can be served in some situations – call to inquire. Taxpayers with low to moderate incomes are eligible – anyone up to $48,000 and families with two or more children up to $56,000.

Barb Wollan, ISU Extension specialist and tax volunteer coordinator encourages workers who do not have bank accounts to open a savings account before they file their taxes. “With a bank account in place,” she said, “you can receive your refund quickly through direct deposit.” Taxpayers who use reloadable prepaid cards should be sure to bring along the routing and account numbers for their card.

Wollan particularly encourages families who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to take advantage of the free tax preparation.

“The EITC offers low and moderate income working families a valuable opportunity to improve their financial situation. By avoiding tax and loan fees, these families can put 100% of those funds to use in ways that build financial security and help them reach additional financial goals,” she said.

Volunteer tax preparation is also available by appointment in nearby communities. In Clarion, call Wright County Extension (515) 532-3453, and in Ellsworth call the Public Library, (515) 836-4852.
