Mobile food pantry coming to Jewell
JEWELL – The Food Bank of Iowa Mobile Food Pantry will be coming to Jewell on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The food pantry will be located at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 439 Main St., from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Families are asked to bring their own boxes or bags.
Susan Lund, coordinator for Jewell’s Lord’s Cupboard, said the Lord’s Cupboard serves an average of 40 families a month. The Mobile Food Pantry comes to set up at he Lord’s Cupboard every other month on the fourth Thursday, she said. This month, because the fourth Thursday falls on Thanksgiving, the Mobile Food Pantry is coming to Jewell on Tuesday instead.
“All the food they bring is free to us and free to the people who come get it,” Lund said. “Anyone can come to this. While the Lord’s Cupboard has restrictions to the South Hamilton community, the mobile pantry has no restrictions.”
Lund said she would like to see more families take advantage of the opportunity the Mobile Food Pantry brings.
“We get food for 60 families right now and sometimes we only get 45 or 50,” she said.
The food brought by the Mobile Food Pantry that isn’t picked up doesn’t go to waste – the Lord’s Cupboard keeps and distributes the leftovers. However, Lund said, they would rather see all that food picked up when the mobile pantry is there.
The Lord’s Cupboard also welcomes volunteers to set up the Mobile Food Pantry distribution on Tuesday.
“We always could use volunteers,” Lund said. “We have a good volunteer base here but for Tuesday I have no clue how many will be able to be here.”
Lund will need volunteers to help with several areas – setting up tables, unloading the Mobile Food Pantry truck, handing out the food and helping clean up after. Anyone interested in volunteering can call Lund at 515-290-3000.
