WILLIAMS – A semitrailer tipped on its side while navigating an exit ramp in rural Hamilton County on Monday afternoon.

The driver of the semi was driving north on Interstate 35 when he entered the exit ramp for U.S. Highway 20 West. While going around the curve of the exit ramp, the semi and trailer tipped on its side just off the shoulder of the road.

The Iowa State Patrol and Williams Fire Department and EMS responded to the incident.

“We’re thinking maybe the wind caught (the trailer) a little bit,” ISP Trooper Denny Schnathorst said. “These happen occasionally out here.”

The Williams first responders worked to free the driver, whose name has not yet been released, who was trapped in the semitrailer’s cab with his legs pinned by the steering wheel.

“He’s not seriously injured,” Schnathorst said. “We’ve tried to remove him other ways, but we couldn’t get him out without fearing the truck would flip over.”

With cooperation between the tow company and the Williams first responders, they were able to stabilize the semitrailer to keep it from flipping over and the driver was safely removed from the truck’s cab.

The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
