Crash between semi-trailer and SUV results in one fatality

DUNCOMBE – One man died Thursday after his Subaru Forester SUV ran into the back of a semi-trailer just off of U.S. Highway 20, south of Duncombe on Vasse Avenue just before noon.
A NEW Cooperative semi-trailer driven by Kirk Gunderson, of Hampton, was driving west on Highway 20 when the truck turned north onto Vasse Avenue, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The State Patrol reported that Ricky Mason, the driver of the SUV owned by Quest Diagnostics, did not see the semi-trailer turn and collided into the back of the trailer.
Mason, of Dysart, was taken by ambulance to UnityPoint Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center, but died en route to the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash.
According to ISP Trooper Paul Gardner, Gunderson was not injured in the collision.
The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol and no citations have been given at this time.

In addition to the ISP, the Webster County Sheriff’s Department, the Duncombe Volunteer Fire Department and an ambulance from the Fort Dodge Fire Department responded to the accident.
