Underground railroad in Iowa is topic of program

The Underground Railroad in Iowa will be the theme of a program to be presented at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Mulberry Center Church in Wilson Brewer Park.

The program will be presented by Judy and Gary Huxford. Their presentation centers around Iowa Underground Railroad sites, with special emphasis on J.B. Grinnell and his impact on the Iowa Underground Railroad. Josiah Bushnell Grinnell was a close friend of John Brown. According to the presenters, Brown had his own room in Grinnell’s house called the Liberty Room.

The Huxfords are retired school music teachers who taught in Iowa public schools. The presenters came to their extensive knowledge through research and multiple visits to historical societies, libraries, courthouses, and the homes or buildings left to tour that were once part of the Underground Railroad.

There is no cost to attend the presentation.
