County appoints deputy examiner

Additional ME investigators are sought

A deputy medical examiner and a medical examiner investigator were appointed at the Tuesday session of the Hamilton County Board of Supervisors.

Dustin Smith, M.D., Eagle Grove, will serve as the deputy medical examiner for Hamilton County. At the July 9 meeting, the board accepted the resignations of Dr. Joseph X. Latella, medical examiner and assistant medical examiner Penny Osborn. Dr. Jon Ahrendsen of Clarion was appointed as the interim medical examiner for Hamilton County.

“Today we have a recommendation for Dustin Smith to serve as deputy medical examiner and to fill in when Dr. Ahrendsen is not available,” said Chairman Doug Bailey.

Tiffany Tolliver, also from Eagle Grove, was appointed to serve as county medical examiner investigator.

Bailey added that the county is still looking for others to serve as investigators.

“If we have individuals who reside in Hamilton County — and of course there are qualifications — that helps us time-wise,” he said. “We would certainly entertain inquiries.”

A drainage petition was received to request a clean out in Drainage District 71 in Lyons Township northwest of Jewell.

William Schwartz, a land-owner in the area, signed and submitted the petition, according to Supervisor Rick Young.

Young said the with the acceptance of the petition, an engineer will be appointed to conduct a survey. Bolton and Menk of Jefferson was named the engineer.

“Eventually we’ll have a hearing and all the landowners in that district will be notified and will have their chance to have their say,” said Young.

The board accepted the resignation of dispatcher/jailer Kelsey Arnold, whose last day with the county was July 9 and approved the hiring of Rebecca Eichler as a part-time regular employee with Friends Forever as a residential house support person and Jason Ribbens as an equipment operator for secondary roads.

A contract with The Shredder, a document shredding service based in Des Moines, was approved. The Shredder will provide services to the courthouse for $60 per month, Human Services, Social Services and Public Health for 30 per month for each agency.
