Webster City Mayor John Hawkins makes Poppy Days official this year. He’s surrounded, left to right, by Pat Nokes, Sharon Keigan, Lorene Burnett and Shirley Lacey. This year, poppies will be sold from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at both Fareway and Hy-Vee in Webster City. They will also be for sale at Hy-Vee on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For 70 years, the American Legion Auxiliary has sponsored Poppy Days as a way to remind the public of the lives sacrificed for the nation. Poppies grew wild on the fields of Flanders, an iconic location that harkens to memories of World War I. Poppy Days always coincide with the Memorial Day weekend.
