Monday meeting fun

-Daily Freeman Journal photo by Teresa Wood Northeast Hamilton Elementary School students and staff meet every morning in the school library to begin their day on a positive note.  In addition to reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and hearing the daily announcements, the NEH family participates in a physical activity to get their hearts pumping and puts smiles on every face.

Since November, Northeast Hamilton Elementary School students and staff begin their day in the school’s Media Center for the Morning Meeting.

It’s more than just announcements or reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, although both are included in the day’s activity.  It is a chance for students to start their day on a positive note, announced NEH Supt./Principal Mike Kruger when the activity debuted on Nov. 19.

The meeting begins with a party atmosphere of group dancing and singing.  An upper grade student delivers a motivational message before reading the day’s announcements.  They hear any NEH news such as Thursday’s announcement by School Nurse Cindi Sweedler that Iowa State University has named Northeast Hamilton one of the top participating schools in its SWITCH program that promotes fitness, nutrition and moderation in technology use.

It’s also a chance to share news of the NEH community such as school librarian Lanette Willems recently becoming a grandmother, twice over.

“Morning Meeting is so much fun,” said Kindergarten teacher Janelle Oakland.  “The kids really look forward to it and we cover a lot of important topics everyday”.
