Iconic travel stop has new owners

Upgrades planned for truck stop, restaurant and motel, with opening expected in late March

WILLIAMS –Boondocks, USA has new owners.

Harry and Shelley Chaudhari of Overton, Nebraska have purchased the iconic Williams truck stop at the intersection of Interstate 35 and Highway 20.

The Chaudharis operate Jay Bros. Truck Stops in West Liberty, Iowa, Overton, Nebraska and WaKeeney, Kansas. Each truck stop is located on an interstate. The West Liberty and Overton locations are on I-80 and the WaKeeney store is off of I-70.

Harry Chaudhari plans to re-open the Williams truck stop, restaurant and motel after upgrades are completed on the fuel pumps. He estimates the business will re-open sometime in late March.

Managing the business will be Chaudhari’s two sons, Bart and Jay. Job interviews will be conducted in early March, he said.

Currently, Chaudhari is assessing the type of cuisine that will be offered at Boondocks. At the Overton, Nebraska truck stop, The Taste of India restaurant offers Panjabi region cuisine.

“We are undecided,” explained Chaudhari as to the menu. “Indian food is what we know. Everyone who tastes it, likes it and they come again”.

Bob and Miriam Welch initially sold the property at auction on Nov. 28 to a California company. When the buyer was unable to meet the conditions of the sale, the business was offered to Chaudhari, the next highest bidder, explained auctioneer David Whitaker of the Whitaker Marketing Group.

The sale closed on Tuesday with a full price offer of $500,000, said Whitaker.
