LEHIGH — A Webster City man was shot by his brother on Saturday while squirrel hunting at the Brushy Creek State Recreation Area.

Sao Bunpan, 55, was shot in the upper body by Khor Bunpan, 50.

Both men are from Webster City, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources said on Tuesday.

DNR conservation officers are investigating, but initially believe this is an accident and no charges have been filed.

The incident happened around midday Saturday, according to the Webster County Sheriff’s Department.

The brothers were hunting together with a party of four at Brushy Creek during opening day of squirrel hunting, the DNR said.

Sao Bunpan was taken to Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City before being transported to an undisclosed Des Moines hospital.

His injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

Squirrel hunting season continues until Feb. 28, 2019, as does rabbit season.

Saturday was also the start of Iowa’s hunting season for five game birds: snipe, doves, rail, teal and Canada goose.
