Poplar Grove Speedway to host Grand Nationals

Three-day event expected to draw 150 racers

KAMRAR – The 4-Cycle Speedway Grand Nationals will be held July 12, 13 and 14 at Poplar Grove Speedway at Kamrar.

Poplar Grove Speedway has been opened and operated by Tim and Holly Mortenson for the past 22 years. They hold go-kart races every other Sunday from April through October.

“Poplar Grove Speedway is ‘Central Iowa’s Fun Track,'” according to Holly Mortenson. “We love to see families spending quality time together, doing an activity that involved the entrie family. We have races from age 5 to 85 currently.”

The 4-Cycle Speedway Grand Nationals will brign racers from all over the United States.

“We expect 150 racers for the three-day event. The highlight of the Grand Nationals is winning a Duffy, the highest award in karting,” according to Holly Mortenson.

Racers will have an opportunity to race in 16 different classes offered this week. Thursday is a practice day. Friday is race day with eight classes. Three are money classes with first place receiving $500, second place earning $300 and third place receiving $150.

Saturday will also feature eight classes with three money classes. Payout will be $1,000 for first, $500 for second and $250 for third.

Racing will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with a pit meeting, the National Anthem, hotlaps and then two rounds of heat classes then features.

Everyone is welcome to wome watch the races on from the south hill at no cost. There is a charge to go into the pits, Holly Mortenson said.
