Interim board approves survey

Questionnaire to ask where families will send students in 2019-2020

Patrons in the Webster City and Northeast Hamilton Schools will be asked to take a survey as they register children for next school year this month.

The interim board of the two districts agreed to follow up with the query to determine where families plan to send their children to school beginning with the 2019-2020 year. That’s the first year of the reorganized district which was approved by Webster City and NEH voters in April.

“At our last meeting, there was conversation around the idea of having an enrollment survey,” said Dr. Mandy Ross, Webster City superintendent. Ross said that the board had talked about asking parents enrolling students for the upcoming school year, where they would like to send their children the following year.

“We’re on the cusp of being ready to do the survey, but I wanted to see if there was any more direction from the board,” she said.

“I think it’s a go, because we need to know,” said Michelle Walters, board member.

Ross asked the board if they were looking for a commitment from the survey respondents or just a general idea so that plans could be made for staffing and facilities. The board agreed that the survey would just seek a general idea of where parents would want their children to attend.

In the newly established district which becomes a reality in 2019-2020, families could choose to attend classes at one of the elementary centers in Webster City or at the Blairsburg learning center.

The board also agreed that an annual review of class size by learning center would be necessary to plan for staffing needs.

Walters encouraged Ross to look at other districts that have had similar reorganizations to see how those issues were handled.
