Weekend escapes and creative outlets

Legacy Learning gears up for spring workshops and classes

Legacy Learning Boone River Valley has a wide variety of workshops and classes planned for spring. Each offers participants a creative outlet to experiment and try new hobbies, including quilting, writing, jewelry making and others.

City Quilts – Quilting Retreat

Looking for a weekend sewing getaway, and maybe want to dip your toes into the “Modern Quilt” arena? This class will introduce you to quilts inspired by city views. Leave the lush green of the country and choose a skyscraper as your inspiration.

Instructor Sharon Cline will lead students through the quilting process and introduce them to a fun, new quilting style.

The class will be held on Friday, March 23 at 6 p.m. and go through Sunday, March 25 at 11 a.m. The course will be held at the Briggs Woods Hickory Cabin. Cost for the class is $160, which includes participants’ stay at the Hickory Cabin for Friday and Saturday night.

This is a bold quilt using black and pastel solids. A limited number of pastel solids kits will be available; call 423-276-6888 to reserve yours, or use the materials list to purchase your choices.

Bring a salad to share on Friday night and participants will a do soup and salad; then group plan the rest of the weekend meals.

A look ahead

Here are some the events Legacy Learning will be holding in the coming months:

Therapeutic Journaling

Visit the Hickory Cabin at Briggs Woods Park for a relaxing, rewarding weekend of writing and poetry. Work with Jennifer Berte to hone writing skills or find the motivation to get started on that long awaited novel or poem. All levels of writers are welcome and writing is not limited to the published workshop topic; all personal exploration is welcome.

This workshop will be held on April 13, 14, 15 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hickory Cabin at Briggs Woods Park. Cost for the class is $100.

Friday night is optional but encouraged as a way to settle in and relax in preparation for the workshop. Jennifer will be available to provide specialized one-on-one feedback if you submit work samples in advance. Stay over in one of the beautiful modern log cabins at Briggs Woods Park. Details are on the website.

Reserve your space by calling 888-832-0012, first come first serve. Each one is $40 a night, or if two share it is $20 apiece.

How to travel to Disney, have an incredible experience that is not the typical Disney trip

Local Iowa Disney expert Drew McLennan will spend the day sharing stories, planning tips, pictures and his knowledge of traveling to Walt Disney World every year since it opened in 1971. You’ll learn preparation and planning, animal Kingdom and Studios, Magic Kingdom and Epcot, where to Stay, and how to do a nature tour (self guided and Disney resources too).

Copper Wrapped Jewelry

with Mary Crystal

In this exciting workshop, individuals will learn some basics of jewelry making. The instructor will talk about basic tools, findings, stringing materials, wire types and gauges. Students will make a simple beaded necklace, attach a charm pendant and create a pair of earrings using basic techniques.

The class will take place on Wednesday, April 18 and Wednesday, April 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Produce Station Pottery, 723 Seneca Street. Cost for the class is $35 with an additional material fee of $15.

Bring your own beads or find some in instructor Mary Crystal’s stash. Students will be using needle nose, round nose, and crimping pliers. These can be purchased at Hobby Lobby or any other craft store but there will be a few pairs available to share for those not ready to take the investment plunge. This will be a fun, casual class. Crystal will try to answer any questions participants have along the way. Jewelry making is a great creative outlet, organizers said. It can be as simple or as complex as the participant wants to make it.

Paint and Sip with Heather Frank

Bring a date, or a group of friends and enjoy creating art in a relaxed environment at the Links Golf Club. Participants will be able to paint, eat and drink in a beautiful setting overlooking the golf course.
