Sheriff warns of scam

Call requesting cash to bail out relative bogus

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is reminding citizens to be aware of ongoing scams. Scammers are trying to get your hard earned money by using various scams.

Sheriff Doug Timmons said most recently his office received a call from a concerned grandparent. The grandparent received a call from who he thought was his grandson. The grandson told him that he was in an accident in Mexico and he hit an off duty police officer and he was now in jail. In order to get out of jail he needed $9,000 to be wired to a subject in Florida. Then to fax the receipt to an 855 area code, which after some investigation. This area code is often used by scammers.

With it being spring break time a lot of people travel to Mexico. In fact, in this incident the grandson was in Mexico, which made the story believable. After a couple phone calls it was determined that the grandson wasn’t in jail and it indeed was a scam.

Timmons said to stay vigilant when something sounds suspicious or too good to be true — it probably is and don’t become a victim.

If you received a call that you believe is a scam contact your local law enforcement and report it.
